Remembering Barney

This memorial is for a very special little boy who brought us all joy, happiness and love. Barney had such a kind disposition and absolutely adored us. He loved all his family with his whole heart, but shared a very special and profound bond with his sister (myself) especially.– We spent every single moment together and were inseparable.

As a kitten, Barney was playful and inquisitive, and especially enjoyed attacking and chewing on his fishing rod toys. He would dash about the house and absolutely loved climbing high up on kitchen cupboards, door frames, wardrobes and shelving units. As he got older, he of course, began to play a little less, but nevertheless he always enjoyed play-fighting with his brother.

Barney was a snuggly, cuddly and loving little boy who freely gifted all his humans with headbutts, hugs and kisses each day without fail. He was light and lithe, but absolutely adored his scran and– if allowed to get away with it– would think nothing of stealing his brother's meals.

Our special blue boy was exceptionally loyal to all his family and was always there to offer cuddles and kisses if one of us was upset, stressed or worried. I suffer a life-long health condition and like his brother, he was intuitive and always offered love and comfort on my particularly difficult days, often taking a little of the pain away.

During this last year, our dear boy was diagnosed with CKD, but he never let his renal disease hold him back. He was as happy and loving as ever, especially enjoying playing with his two favourite toys; Barney the Owl and Sammy the Fox. It's got to be noted that he wasn't a huge fan of renal food, but he certainly enjoyed his weekly treats and occasional small portions of white fish and chicken.

He was so incredibly strong and fought right until the last, and we are all terribly heart-broken and devastated by his passing. I for one, have no idea how I am going to cope without him and my heart is shattered beyond repair. He was– and always will be– so incredibly loved and will reside in the hearts of all his family for eternity.

Q and A

Where did you get him?
Barney & his brother; Fred came from a Burmese breeder in Bath. It was the second day in January when we made the journey over to see them. They were so incredibly tiny and such sweethearts. Despite crying when I first saw them, it truly was love at first sight. When we brought them home a few days later, it took a little longer for Barney to trust us, but once he settled in, our bond grew stronger then ever.

Why did you name him as such?
Originally, we were going to name them Arthur and Lancelot, but their dad didn't like those names, so we began to throw around ideas. I can't remember which one of us suggested Fred and Barney, but I'm so glad that those were the names we chose because it really did suit both of their personalities. Barney was also christened with the following nicknames;-

"Beebo Boo" "B" "Barnaby Rudge" "My Little Man" "Booch" "Blue Candy" "My Favourite Blue Boy"

Why did you decide to get a pet? And why him in particular?
We got Barney and his brother Fred after saying goodbye to our previous furbaby. We were devastated when we lost her and couldn't get though life without the love of a furry family member.

What was he like? Describe his personality.
Barney was an active and playful boy. He was both a little shy and cautious during the first few days, but once he settled in, there was no stopping him. He was naughty and mischievous and unfortunately for us, he had a fetish for chewing wires, including ruining his dad's Christmas present. It wasn't just wires he would chew though, and you had to be constantly vigilant because he would eat just about anything he could get his paws on. He especially enjoyed munching on plastic bags and tissues, so of course, we soon had to ensure that our home was "Barney-Proof", and we watched him like a hawk. He was also loving and sweet and his favourite pastime in life was snuggling with his family.

Did he have pet siblings or other animals that he bonded with?
We had to say goodbye to Barney's brother; Fred in November last year. All of us– including Barney– took it very badly.

What do you miss about him?
I miss everything about Barney! We spent every single moment together; both day and night, and I have no idea how I will cope without him.
